Why Hot “Stuff”?

I grew up in the 757 — Norfolk, Virginia, spending my weekends farming on my family’s Certified Century Farm in Pasquotank County, North Carolina, an area known as Newland. What started generations ago as soybean farming eventually expanded into a wide variety of produce — including hot peppers — which today are used to make NuLand’s sauces.

The name NuLand Hot Stuff Company came from a playful misspelling of Newland and a suggestion from my dad. It stuck — and it perfectly captured the spirit of what this brand would become.

Before hot sauce entered my life, I owned and operated a dental laboratory, spending countless hours under a microscope crafting ceramic dental smiles. Rooted in the same technical precision of the dental lab, my creativity finally has room to play - through flavor, color, and food made to bring people joy. I still like to make people smile - just in a different way.

Hot sauce started as a dabble among friends — all of us experimenting with recipes for fun. Then one day, I was asked to provide a case of each of my first four flavors to a local restaurant. That moment changed everything. It became clear that this path — sharing food, flavor, and connection — felt infinitely cooler than making ceramic teeth ever had.

That was the turning point. The all-or-nothing moment. The leap.

So what does the “Stuff” in Hot Stuff Company really mean?

It means more than sauce.

It’s about authentic smiles, not ceramic ones. It’s about fun, silliness, bold flavor, and human connection. It’s about creating unexpected, crave-worthy flavor combinations inspired by the peppers grown on my family’s farm — flavors you don’t see in hot sauce every day. That philosophy became what I call “Farm-to-Flavour.”

At the heart of NuLand is the experience: enjoying food, enjoying people, and not taking life quite so seriously. If I can keep building something that brings people joy, sparks conversation, and makes meals more fun — I think everything will be just fine in the world of Hot Stuff.
